HCL Notes and Domino Migration to Microsoft 365

HCL Notes and Domino installations that have run for decades do not retire themselves. Mail, calendars, contacts, personal archives, and dozens of workflow applications built on Domino databases all need somewhere to land when the platform is decommissioned. LeadThem Consulting has been executing these migrations since 2005, using Quest Migrator for Notes to Exchange and Quest Migrator for Notes to SharePoint to move data with full fidelity to Microsoft 365 and SharePoint Online.

HCL Notes and Domino v11.0.x reached end-of-support in June 2025. If your organization is running v9.0.x or v10.0.x, extended support runs through June 2030, but the window to plan and execute a structured migration is shorter than it looks. The complexity of a Notes migration grows the longer it sits.

Quest's Notes migrators sit within Quest Secure Migration, the migration solution under the Quest Security Management Platform. LeadThem also delivers the platform's second solution, Quest Identity Security and Resilience, for the Microsoft 365 and Entra ID environment that hosts your data after the move.

Mailbox, calendar, and data migration to Exchange Online

Quest Migrator for Notes to Exchange moves mailboxes, calendars, tasks, and personal address books from HCL Notes (formerly Lotus Notes) and Domino to Exchange Online with documented fidelity. LeadThem manages the full engagement: source environment analysis, coexistence routing so mail keeps flowing during the transition, batch scheduling, cutover, and post-migration validation. Users arrive on Exchange Online with their data intact and no gap in mail delivery.

Notes application migration to SharePoint Online

The harder problem in most Notes migrations is the applications. Organizations running Notes for ten or more years typically have dozens of Domino databases serving as workflow tools, document repositories, team collaboration spaces, and custom forms. None of these translate automatically to SharePoint Online. Quest Migrator for Notes to SharePoint provides a structured path for standard and custom Notes applications to SharePoint Online and Microsoft 365. LeadThem assesses each application in the Domino environment, classifies it by complexity and business criticality, and manages the migration or retirement of each database individually. Applications that cannot be migrated faithfully are flagged before the project starts, not during cutover.

Why this migration is harder than it looks

Notes and Domino have a data model that is fundamentally different from Exchange and SharePoint. A Notes document is not a mailbox item. A Domino database is not a SharePoint list. The field mappings, rich text content, embedded objects, DocLinks, and formula logic that power a Domino workflow application do not have direct equivalents in the Microsoft platform. Migrators who have not run Notes and Domino in production discover these gaps during the project, after they have made commitments about scope and timeline.

LeadThem's engineers have worked inside large HCL Notes and Domino environments since 2005. We know where the edge cases are, and we scope them before the engagement starts.
